The Drawing Laboratory

The Drawing Laboratory sessions are experimental with the aim of encouraging mark making and thinking to explore, evolve and extend your drawing practice and challenge habits.

Different prompts for ways of working and looking are given to guide the students in a supportive and friendly space, to build confidence to experiment anddevelop drawing as an inspiring tool and as a daily practice.

The Drawing Laboratory sessions have run at Newlyn Gallery and Tremenheere Garden, Penance. 2023/24 Locations and dates to be confirmed.

There are 5 week blocks: Drawing on The Coast, Botanical Explosions and Embodied Drawing. Each session is themed, focusing on a particular aspect,
technique and media of drawing, such as scale, tone and line, repetition. Sessions begin outside looking, drawing and collecting ideas and materials to draw from and with. Experiments with a range of dry/wet media, surfaces and processes, including mono printing leads to very exciting developments, which form the basis for discussion and idea, method and technique sharing.

The overarching aim of the Laboratory is for participants to develop their own, very individual visual language.

Materials Participants bring basic items, an A4 sketch book/pad medium weight paper and a range of B pencils. Additional dry/wet drawing mediums and
drawing tools optional. Materials provided – traditional and untraditional surfaces and mediums, charcoal, graphite, black and white acrylic, collage material, glue, gloves.
